🥋 General Questions
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on controlling, submitting, and defending using leverage and technique — not strength. It’s often practiced in gi or no-gi styles.
What’s the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
Gi involves wearing a traditional kimono, allowing grips on clothing. No-Gi is practiced in rash guards and shorts, emphasizing speed and body control.
Is BJJ effective for self-defense?
Absolutely. BJJ teaches control, escapes, and submissions from real-world positions like the ground or clinch, making it highly practical for self-defense.
🧠 Beginner Concerns
What Should I Wear?
- Gi Class: Gi top, pants & belt if you own them if not wear the below. (We may have a spare you can use on the day)
- No-Gi: Rash guard or fitted T-shirt + board shorts without zips or buttons
- For both Gi & No-Gi please ensure you trim your finger and toenails and maintain good personal hygiene.
Am I Too Old or Unfit to Start?
Not at all. BJJ is for everyone — regardless of age or fitness level. Progress is personal and paced at your comfort.
How Often Should I Train?
Aim for 2–3 sessions a week which is ideal for beginners. Focus on recovery and learning — not over training. If you can only manage once a week that is fine too.

🏆 Progression & Culture
How long does it take to get a black belt?
On average, 8–12 years. BJJ belts are earned through consistent training, skill development, and mat time.
What’s the belt order?
White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black.
Through consistent training & as your skill progresses you will obtain up to 4 stripes on your belt for each color until you reach black at which time stripes are known as degrees & represent time in grade and progression within the black belt ranks themselves. (Kids have a different belt system).
Is tapping out a bad thing?
Not at all. Tapping is how you learn safely. It’s a sign of awareness, not weakness.
